What you’ll need to work remotely in Spain
Before you start living the dream, there are a few practical steps to take. One of the best options for remote workers is Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa. This is a tailor-made visa for any foreigner who wants to live in Spain as a resident while continuing to carry out employed or self-employed activity remotely for companies located outside Spain, using exclusively IT, telematic or telecommunications means. Professionals who work for a company may only work for non-Spanish employers, while self-employed professionals (autónomos) may also work for Spanish clients provided this does not exceed 20% of their total activity.
Requirements
- An application for a Foreigner’s Identity Number (NIE) must be lodged at the same time as the visa.
- Proof of being a graduate or postgraduate from a recognised university, vocational training centre or business school, or alternatively a minimum of three years’ professional experience.
- Evidence that the company hiring the applicant carries out real and continuous business activity.
- Documentation showing that the employment or professional relationship can be performed remotely.
- Proof that the employment or professional relationship between the applicant and the employer/client has existed for at least three months, together with documents setting out the terms and conditions of the remote activity.
Types of permits and duration
- Visa: when the applicant is outside Spain, they will obtain a permit allowing them, if they wish, to reside and work throughout Spanish territory. The permit is valid for 1 year, unless the intended period of work is shorter, in which case the visa will match that duration. After the first year, the applicant must apply for a residence authorisation.
Residence authorisation: when the applicant is legally in Spain, they will obtain a 3-year permit allowing them, if they wish, to reside and work throughout Spanish territory.
